Jewelrys Most Usual Forms
Jewelry comes from an Old French word joule which literally means jewel. However, other word etymologists speculated that it came from the word "jocale" a Latin word which means plaything. Wearing jewelry serves many different purposes particularly as a symbol to others. A crucifix jewelry is a sign of being a Christian just like a wedding ring to a married individual. It can also be applied in special purposes such as in the case of puzzle jewelry, medical alert jewelry, prayer jewelry (japa malas, prayer beads, & prayer ropes), and mourning jewelry.
The most usual forms of jewelry include the armlets, bracelets, cuff links, earrings, hair ornaments, anklets, and necklaces. Of all the forms of jewelry, the ring has the most variety. It comprises the wedding rings, engagement rings, promise rings, and the college class rings. Other eccentric and strange types of jewelry are the toe rings, clip-on earrings, chokers, nose-jewels, earcuffs, body piercing jewelry, and the magnetic earrings. Aside from gold, platinum and silver, other jewelry resources include precious gemstones (such as emeralds, diamonds, opals, sapphires, & rubies) glass, wood, enamel, natural animal materials (such as ivory and bone), and even clays.
The first recorded use of jewelry was around 7000 BC in the regions of Anatolia, Iran and Eastern Europe. During this time, the most common jewelry resource is the copper. In 5000 BC, Ancient Egypt began applying copper jewelries as part of their ornaments. At some point in 1500 BC, wearing earrings became fashionable in Egypt. Great Britain first started using the iron jewelry at around 500 BC.
